N. B. Delone (Delaunay, born 21.01 (02.02) 1856 in Moscow - 20.03.1931 died in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg) - scientist, engineer, one of the pioneers of gliding, propagandist and popularizer of aviation knowledge. He was the trainee of Zhukovsky.

His origins are from France. His grandfather Pierre Charles Delaunay was a doctor in Napoleon's army, which in 1812 came to Russia, where he was captured. In Moscow, he married Smolensk landowner Tukhachevsky, adopted Russian name and nationality and became a famous doctor.

Son of Pierre Charles Delyanau - Boris Delaunay was also a doctor and married Countess Dmitrieva - Mamontova. Boris was wounded at the Russian-Turkish War of 1877-78 for the liberation of Bulgaria, and soon died.

Childhood of Nicolay was held in Moscow. He studied at the classical school, and later was admitted at the physical-mathematical faculty of Moscow University. Graduating it in 1878 he moved to St. Petersburg, where he had a temporary part-time work, and then taught at the school. In 1889, he married Nadezhda Alexandrovna Georgievska - daughter of privy councilor, professor at Moscow University. They had three sons and a daughter: Boris (03 (15) .03.1890, St. Petersburg - 17.07.1980, Moscow) - a famous mathematician, traveler, mountaineer, corr. USSR Academy of Sciences (1929), Leo (29 04 (11 05) 1891, St. Petersburg - 01.11.1969, Kharkov) - Scientist cytogenetics, Doctor of Biological Sciences (1937), Alexander - died during the Civil War 1917-21 years, fighting on the side of the Whites, Natalia - a biologist.

Nicholay Delaunay defended his master's thesis "The algebraic integrals of motion of a rigid body about a fixed point" in 1982 in Novorossiysk (Odessa) University.

In 1893-94 he was the Assistant Professor St. Peterburg University, where in 1894 he defended his doctoral dissertation on "The transfer of rotation and mechanical drawing curves hinge lever mechanism."

In the 1895-99 he was the Professor Novoaleksandrovsk Institute of Agriculture and Forestry (Pulawy, Poland); 1900-05 - Tenured Professor (Chair) of practical mechanics Warsaw University of Technology.

Since 1906 during 15 years he was the Professor, Department of Theoretical Mechanics, Kiev Polytechnical Institute (now the NTUU"KPI").

In connection with the revolutionary events the training in the KPI was discontinued. Nicholay Delaunay by conviction was for the Bolsheviks, but after the arrival of Denikin was in their counterintelligence. However, his wife Nadezhda was able to release him.

After the establishment of Soviet power in Ukraine Nicholay Delaunay is a regular consultant for the students of aviation enthusiasts, visit the glider club and aviation students KPI workshops, and in 1928 moved to Leningrad.

His scientific activity was related to the research and inventions in the theoretical, analytical and technical mechanics, the theory of mechanisms and machines, impact theory. He proved a theorem on the position of the screw axis in the solid body. He studied the shape and movement of the elastic line to the rod at small deformations and vibrations, developed the theory of devices for playback mathematical relationships, studied oscillations of mechanical systems, motion and stability of gyroscopes. He solved the problem of determining the consolidated mass as a function of the coordinates of the center of percussion, proved a number of theorems on the screw axis.

Nicholay Delaunay invented the transmission of rotation without dead center position and a change in attitude angular velocities, methods of using kinematic chains for playback planar curves based on a four-tier reverser hinged-lever mechanisms proposed and implemented improvements for compounds to improve the accuracy of reference point of this mechanism.

Nicholay Delaunay was the selfless advocate of aviation ideas, which was at the forefront of knowledge and helped create one of the most powerful industries in the world - the aircraft. In 1908-09, together with his sons and engineer Garf constructed two gliders built biplane made of bamboo. He participated in the aeronautic group at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute, Kiev Society of Aeronautics, Aviation Scientific-Technical Society in Kiev.
